According to a recent survey of more than 7,000 students on the StudentCom. Network, 3 out of 4 students would prefer access to Facebook rather than access to a car! That shows how students see access to technology and social media as a fundamental requirement in their lives.
75% of students in the survey rated Wi-Fi and access to the internet as a main priority when choosing their accommodation. And whilst over 90% of students rated their bedroom as the most important place to have the facility to connect to the internet, over 33% expect access in the communal area of a student building as well. This is testament to the fact that a lot of studying is done in groups within communal areas, especially when it comes to revision sessions before exams.
Around 40% of students spend over 6 hours a day connected to the internet. This tends to be a mixture of studying, listening to music and socialising with friends. The survey also indicated that 96% of students connect to the internet using 2 or more devices – predominantly laptops, tablets and mobiles.
96% of students use Facebook, with many also using Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram as a way of communicating with their peers and the university. One thing’s for sure…..when it comes to finding the right accommodation, students expect to be online with no issues and this needs to be front of mind for student property developers.
